Following Emergency Procedures
Each industry will have its own specific policies and procedures that must be followed in case of an emergency. These will relate to the situations unique to that industry. In case of emergency produces for a dangerous situation such as a fire, precautions are to be extremely taken. Fire are a very dangerous hazards in any organisation and can quickly get out of control, so they must be dealt with quickly and efficiently. It is vital that:
In an event of a fire:
Alert your supervisor or Fire Warden to ensure that the fire alarm is sounded. Once you have done this:
EVACUATION
No mater what type of organisation you work for, it is required by law to have an evacuation plan and it must include a map of the correct evacuation route. This map must be placed in each area and stairway of the premises. It should be clearly mark not only the route that workers and customers are to follow but also where they are to meet once outside the building. This is important because once the building has been evacuated, the PCBU or WHS officer must do a headcount to ensure that all staff and visitors are accounted for.
In the event of an evacuation:
If you are involved in or witness an emergency situation you should report it immediately to:
- fire extinguishers and fire blankets be available and in full working order
- staff are properly trained in the use of this equipment
- exit doors are clearly marked and kept free of blockage
- smoke and fire alarms are installed
- regular training and emergency evacuation procedures are conducted
In an event of a fire:
- If the fire is small and easily controlled find the nearest fire extinguisher and put out the fire if possible.
- If the fire cannot be put out or is too large, alert your supervisor and call 000 to report the fire.
Alert your supervisor or Fire Warden to ensure that the fire alarm is sounded. Once you have done this:
- listen for instructions.
- get out of the area and close all doors and windows behind you
- help them is it does not endanger you or others
- follow your organisation's evacuation procedures.
EVACUATION

- check that no one else is in the area
- if there is no danger to yourself, assist any injured people
- do not use the lifts
- go directly to the designate meeting point
- remain there until your manager or safety officer has been checked that everyone is present
- do not go back into the building until the Police or other emergency officers say it is safe to do so
If you are involved in or witness an emergency situation you should report it immediately to:
- Your PCBU or supervisor
- First Aid or WHS officer
- Security personnel if available and appropriate
- Local authorities such as the Police, Fire Department or Ambulance.
